Are there “good” emotions and “bad” emotions? Should we push away feelings of sadness or anger and seek to immediately replace them with more “acceptable” ways to feel? How about our mental health? Should we admit when we are struggling or hold back our struggles in order to not burden those around us?

This week we are talking with the incredible Zahraa Surtee who is a mental health therapist committed to educating others about emotions and breaking the stigma around mental health..

Growing up in a traditional Indian culture, Zaharra shares with us that it was unacceptable to share your emotions and admit that you were struggling. As a child this left her confused about how to find the support that she desperately needed. As someone who was in tune to her emotions, not having the “language” to express what was going on internally was incredibly difficult especially after enduring a tragic loss in her family.

When she grew up,  Zahraa discovered a deep love for psychology and eagerly pursued a career in therapy. This gave her the platform to speak on the cultural implications of mental health and the importance for us to acknowledge how we truly feel.

In this powerful conversation, we also talk about the importance of acknowledging the uniqueness of everyone’s journey and why admitting how we feel is truly a strength. We also dig into our role as parents and how important it is to be “conscious” throughout our parenting journey. We discuss how we can intentionally provide a space for our children to feel seen and heard.

What about you? What are your thoughts around our emotions? Do you feel guilty feeling certain ways? How can we hold a space for others who are struggling? Continue the conversation by heading to our private Facebook Group: Hope to Recharge….because as always, together is better!
