Within the next 24 hours, more than 3,000 teenagers in the United States will attempt to take their own lives. Seventeen of them will succeed. Jackie Simmons’ daughter, Stephanie, shared that statistic when delivering a speech which would change lives and inspire teens to come together with Stephanie’s sisters and to create, “The Teen Suicide Prevention Society.”
When Stephanie was 14, she attempted suicide for the first time. Over the next several years, her mother placed her in different types of treatment programs, but never spoke with her directly about what she was going through. When Stephanie stood up and gave that speech, Jackie realized her huge mistake. Her daughter suggested to the audience, the solution to teen suicidality was prevention, not intervention, and that kids should be talked to about mental health, suicide, and strategies to deal with any difficulties they encounter before they were having a problem with it.
That is the basis of their society. Today, they train people to be emotionally and mentally resilient and provide tools to talk with loved ones about suicide, before it appears to be a problem. Those who join the Teen Suicide Prevention Society receive a script on talking with their teens about suicide, tools to learn about where they stand, and to learn skills in mental and emotional resilience, and support from trained and professional staff. Joining is free, and access to most of the programs they offer are also free of charge.

Quotes:
“[I am] able to say with absolute certainty, that the silence on this topic is killing us. It’s deadly.” @JackieSimmons @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge
“Here’s a myth: people who attempt to die by suicide, whether they die or not, they’re not looking to die. They just can’t figure out how to live. They just don’t know how to live with the pain… It’s not a fascination with death. It is literally, that’s the only option they can see in that moment.” @JackieSimmons @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge
“What if there’s no sign of struggle? … the first sign is often a [suicide] attempt.“ @JackieSimmons @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge
“The reality is according to Freud, suicidal thoughts are normal. They’re part of the natural problem solving abilities of the brain. They’re part of our worst case scenario mechanism. They are there for a reason they can spur problem-solving if we let it.” @JackieSimmons @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge
“Whatever age your kid is now, now is the right time to start… we can’t afford to wait. We can’t afford to wait for there to be signs, for us to think that there’s a risk factor, for there to be some reason to have the talk.” The reason to have the talk about suicide is because they’re still breathing. @JackieSimmons @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge
